The engraving represents Messina in the middle of the XIX th century. This is a beautiful French engraving from 1860, representing Messina, a city located in Sicily. Messina was founded in the 8th century BC. It became then part of the Roman Empire, and then after the Roman Empire fell was conquered by Goths, the Byzantine Empire (in 535), the Arabs (in 842)and the Normands (in 1061). The city reached the peak of its splendour in the XVII th century under the Spanish domination, being one of the 10 greatest city in Europe. At the time of the engraving, it was under the reign of the Bourbon Familly.
